“This year, there is a slight delay in the onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala. Monsoon onset over Kerala is likely to be delayed by 4 days on June 4,” the weather office said in a statement. Monsoon arrived in Kerala ahead of time last year.

The IMD said last month that India is expected to receive normal rainfall during the southwest monsoon season despite El Nino conditions. Rainfed agriculture is an important component of India’s agricultural landscape, with 52 percent of the net cultivated area dependent on rain. It accounts for about 40 percent of the country’s total food production, contributing significantly to India’s food security and economic stability.

The India Meteorological Department on Tuesday said the heatwave conditions in the first fortnight of May were less severe due to western disturbances affecting parts of northwest India. The next Western Disturbance is approaching Northwest India.

India Meteorological Department scientist Kuldeep Srivastava told that dusty winds are blowing in Haryana, Delhi NCR, western Uttar Pradesh and north-eastern Rajasthan. The main reason behind this is that a western disturbance has passed and strong winds are blowing.
