A horrific video surfaces that shows brutality, Nihang Sikhs killed man in Amritsar over chewing tobacco and others watching.
Amritsar: Another brutality caught on camera, video surfaces online that shows a man was hacked to death by three men, including two Nihang Sikhs, on a street near the Golden Temple in Amritsar last night, police said today. It was just after midnight when the Nihang Sikhs — part of an ultra-conservative order within the Sikhs — took offence to the victim, Harmanjeet Singh, chewing tobacco and having had liquor, Police Commissioner Arun Pal Singh told reporters. One of the accused, Ramandeep Singh, has been arrested while searches are on for the two Nihang Sikhs.
A CCTV camera outside a hotel captured the murder — it showed several people standing by — barely a kilometre from the temporal Sikh shrine. The body remained on the street overnight, next to a drain, until police finally got information this morning. The victim belonged to Chatiwind area of the city.
Police said the victim was sitting on his motorcycle when the attackers approached him. His body was found nearby the next morning.
“It is shameful that while there were 6-7 people on the spot, none of them called us,” the city police chief said.
On earlier fights over similar issues in the area, he was asked how the police would ensure such vigilantism is stopped. “Whenever we have got a complaint, we have acted with alertness,” he replied.
