IND vs SL, World Cup 2023: India’s batsman Virat Kohli surpasses Sachin Tendulkar to achieve big feat in ODIs

Mumbai: Indian batsman Virat Kohli added another massive milestone to his already distinguished career as he went past the 1000-run aggregate marks in ODIs in 2023 on Thursday. He became the third India batsman after Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma to achieve the feat in ODIs during India 2023. Kohli achieved the feat during the Cricket World Cup 2023 match against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai as the veteran India batter continued his brilliant run of form in the competition.

This was the eighth time that Kohli scored 1000+ runs in a calendar year and as a result, he broke the world record held by legendary India cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar achieved the feat seven times during his legendary career in ODI cricket. The prolific 34-year-old batter needed just 34 runs to go past Tendulkar’s record.

The 34-year-old batsman ultimately fell 12 runs short of equaling Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries. Kohli was out after playing a brilliant inning of 88 runs and along with Shubman Gill, he made an important partnership of 189 runs to put India in a strong position. At the time of writing, the home team was batting at 255/3 after 39 overs, with Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul at the crease.

Kohli came out to bat in the very first over, as captain Rohit Sharma was out on the second ball of the match to a beautiful off-cutter ball from left-arm fast bowler Dilshan Madushanka. Kohli and Gill were put through a testing phase early on, with Dilshan’s new-ball partner Dushmantha Chameera making a stellar start. The right-arm fast bowler bowled two consecutive maiden overs to keep India’s attacking batsmen at bay.

Both players have completed their half-centuries and are taking India ahead in this crucial match, which will take the Men in Blue straight into the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka, who have not performed well in this showpiece event, will be out of the race for the semi-finals if they lose this match against India. This will be India’s seventh consecutive win in this prestigious tournament.
