India records 14,623 new COVID-19 cases in last 24hr , 12% higher than yesterday

India today logged 14,623 fresh COVID-19 cases, which is 12 per cent higher than yesterday. The country also reported 197 deaths over the last 24 hours. Overall, the cases and deaths have been on a decline.With 13,058 fresh Covid infections logged in yesterday, it was India’s lowest daily rise in cases in 231 days.

The daily rise in new coronavirus infections has been below 30,000 for 26 straight days and less than 50,000 daily new cases have been reported for 115 consecutive days now.

The active cases comprise 0.52 per cent of the total infections, the lowest since March 2020, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.15 per cent, the highest since March 2020.

The country will soon have administered one billion COVID-19 vaccine doses, but the milestone masks a yawning gap between the number of people who have been fully inoculated and those that have had just one shot.

Home to the world’s most devastating Covid outbreak earlier this year, the country has seen cases ebb the past few months, dimming the urgency to get vaccinated.

Kerala continues to see the highest number of cases in the country; 7,643 cases were logged since yesterday. The state also reported 77 deaths, the most in a day for any state.

In Maharashtra, the state with the highest number of overall cases (65,94,820), restaurants can now remain open till midnight and shops till 11 pm, with the state government relaxing the curbs imposed due to the Covid outbreak.

Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar – the five big states – have reported zero Covid deaths over the last 24 hours.

The Bihar government has made COVID-19 test mandatory for those coming from other states during Diwali and Chhath festivals.

The coastal state of Goa, a huge draw among tourists, reported 80 fresh Covid cases and four deaths due to coronavirus.
