New Delhi: India reported 1,94,720 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, 15.8 per cent higher than yesterday’s 1.68 lakh cases. The daily positivity rate – or number of people infected per 100 tests – is 11.5 per cent, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday.

The active cases rose to 9,55,319, the highest in 208 days, while the death toll climbed to 4,84,655 with 442 fresh fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated.

The country has so far reported 4,868 cases of Omicron infection, the highly transmissible coronavirus variant first detected in South Africa. Maharashtra has the most Omicron cases with 1,281, followed by Rajasthan with 645 cases.Of the total 4,868 cases of the Omicron variant, 1,805 people have recovered or migrated so far.

Over 153 crore vaccine doses have been administered in India since the time inoculation started, making a significant milestone in the fight against COVID-19.

At least 120 districts in 29 states and Union Territories have reported a weekly positivity rate of 10 per cent in the third wave of the pandemic.

The active cases comprise 2.65 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate decreased to 96.01 per cent, the ministry said.

An increase of 13,38,73 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 34,63,05,36, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.34 per cent.

India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19.

India crossed the grim milestone of two crore on May 4 and three crore on June 23.

In the third wave of the pandemic, most infected people have recovered at home and the level of hospitalisations has been less than half of that seen during the last major wave of infections in April and May.

Many states have announced night curfews while Delhi also imposed a weekend lockdown last week, closed private offices as well as restaurants and bars in a bid to rein in the fast-spreading Omicron variant.
