Indian family among 8 dead in attempt to enter US from Canada, say cops

New Delhi: Eight people, including members of an Indian family, drowned in the St. Lawrence River while trying to enter the US illegally from Canada. According to Canadian news agencies, police recovered eight bodies near a capsized boat in an area of Quebec during an aerial search with the Canadian Coast Guard on Friday, while the search for a missing infant continues. The dead were six adults and two children.

The bodies of these dead have been found in a swampy area near the St. Lawrence River. According to Canadian local media, two families are involved in the deaths, one of which is Indian and the other is from Romania. The dead included a newborn who had Canadian citizenship.

It is being told that all of them were victims of this tragedy when they were trying to enter America illegally from Canada. Canada’s Akwesne Mohawk police said the first dead body was found around 5 p.m. It was observed in the marsh area of Tsi Snaihne in the Quebec region. The Marine Police investigated the area during which they also sought the assistance of Coast Guards and Fire Department.

The police department said it would seek help from the Sûreté du Québec, the regional police force and the Ontario Provincial Police Air Support in investigating the matter. The police has issued a statement saying that at present the cause of death of these people is still not known. The results will be known after the post mortem report and toxicology test. Police is currently engaged in ascertaining the identity of the deceased and their status in Canada.

In April last year, six Indians were rescued from the icy St Regis river in the same area. Mohawk Police received a report of a boat traveling from the province of Ontario to Cornwall stating that the boat was experiencing suspicious activity. After which the police took action. The police had received information that a lot of goods were kept in the boat.
