Indian Navy fires on Tamil Nadu fishermen in middle of sea, injuring one

Fishermen from Tamil Nadu’s Mayiladuthurai were injured when officers aboard an Indian Navy ship opened fire on them.

Chennai: Fishermen from Tamil Nadu’s Mayiladuthurai were injured when officers aboard an Indian Navy ship opened fire on them. One of the fishermen has been seriously injured in the incident, and a Navy helicopter had to be used to rescue the injured fisherman. The injured was rushed to the hospital for treatment. An investigation into the incident has begun.

The shocking incident took place when ten fishermen went out to sea from the Karaikal fishing harbour last week. Personnel from an Indian Navy ship that was patrolling nearby opened fire on them as they were fishing in the northern sea between Kodiakkarai (Point Calimere) and Rameswaram.

A fishing boat was damaged by bullets in this shooting, injuring fisherman Veerav (32) from Mayiladuthurai district’s Managiri. His left thigh was shot twice, along with his stomach.

After the incident, some of the Indian Navy personnel informed Uchhapuli INS Parundu Naval Base. Later, an Uchipulli Naval Base chopper was pressed into service, where the injured fisherman got first aid.

After receiving the initial treatment, he was transferred to the Ramanathapuram Government Medical College Hospital for further treatment. The seriously injured fisherman, Veeravel, was admitted at Madurai Rajaji Government Hospital for further treatment.

Meanwhile, the District Collector, John Tom Varghese, and District Superintendent of Police, Thangadurai, met with Veeravel and inquired about his health and discussed the shooting incident that took place in the midst of the river.
