This warship has been prepared under the Project 17A program, it is the sixth warship of this project. All these warships were built in India only.
Today, on August 17, President Draupadi Murmu, the Supreme Commander of the Army, will launch ‘Vindhyagiri’, the sixth ship of 17A frigates. The ships of this project have been designed in-house by the Warship Design Bureau of the Indian Navy. It is named after the mountain range of Karnataka, built at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited, Kolkata. BrahMos missile can also be deployed on this.
Vindhyagiri with new technology
These warships are a follow-on to the Project 17 class frigates (Shivalik class), with improved stealth features, advanced weapons and sensors, and platform management systems. For nearly 31 years, the old INS Vindhyagiri served the Indian Navy and during this time saw many challenging missions and foreign exercises. After which now the new Vindhyagiri with new technology is joining the Navy’s fleet.
All ships named after mountain ranges
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) was entrusted with the construction of four ships and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) three ships under the Project 17A programme. The first five ships of this project Taragiri, Udayagiri, Dunagiri, Nilgiri, Himgiri have been launched. All these ships have been named after mountain ranges in India. The project was launched to build a series of stealth guided-missile frigates. The total cost of Project 17A is around Rs 25,700 crore.
