Actually Salman Rushdie is a well known writer. In 1981, he had a book called Midnight’s Children. Through that book, the rapidly changing situation in India after independence was beautifully told. Salman was also awarded the Booker Prize for that book.

But before Salman could be happy with this success, one of his other books created a big ruckus. The name of that book was The Satanic Verses. This book was not welcomed at all in Iran. The Muslim society there alleged that this book insults their religion.

Things got so bad after that book that in 1989, the late Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa, calling for Rushdie’s death. Not only this, the fatwa also talked about giving a reward of more than 3 million dollars to the person who killed Rushdie.

Seeing the controversy, Salman Rushdie had to stay in hiding for many years. He could not even meet his family. For about ten years, his game of hide-and-seek went on like this. He kept receiving death threats and made every effort to save himself.

But after 10 years, a big relief came in his life. In the year 1998, Iran made it clear that they do not support the killing of Salman Rushdie at all. Even that fatwa was not given any importance from his side. But even that attitude of Iran could not reduce the hatred towards Salman in a community.

On the attack on Salman, Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen has written that I am numb of the attack on Salman. Never thought that no such attack can be done. They are living in the west for many years, their security is also being done since 1989. If they can be attacked, the message is clear that whatever question raises question, his life is also a threat.
