Kochi (Kerala): Today is a historic day for India. The country’s largest ever and first indigenous aircraft carrier ‘INS Vikrant’ with about 2,200 rooms designed for around 1,600 crew members will be dedicated to the nation today. PM Narendra Modi will launch INS Vikrant in Cochin, Kerala today. It is the largest ship ever built in the maritime history of India. Prime Minister PM Modi will commission the aircraft carrier with this indigenous state-of-the-art automatic equipment built at a cost of Rs 20,000 crore at the Cochin Shipyard.

The Prime Minister will also unveil the new naval flag (mark) at the ship’s launch event, which will be in line with the rich Indian maritime heritage, leaving behind the colonial past.

Vice Chief of the Indian Navy, Vice Admiral SN Ghormade had earlier said that INS Vikrant would contribute to ensuring peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific and Indian Ocean region. He said that the flight test on INS Vikrant will start in November, which will be completed by the middle of 2023. He said the MiG-29 jets would operate from the warship for the first few years.

The commissioning of INS Vikrant will be an important step towards India’s self-reliance in the defense sector. With the entry of Vikrant into service, India will join a select group of countries such as the US, UK, Russia, China and France that have the capability to indigenously design and build an aircraft carrier, which is part of the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. ‘ There will be a real proof of initiative.

The warship has been built using indigenous equipment and machinery made by India’s leading industrial houses as well as over 100 Small, Cottage and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). With the launch of Vikrant, India will have two aircraft carriers in service, which will strengthen the country’s maritime security.

The indigenous aircraft carrier, designed by the Warship Design Bureau (WDB), an organization of the Indian Navy and built by Cochin Shipyard Limited, a public sector shipyard under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, is named after its illustrious predecessor, India’s first aircraft carrier ‘Vikrant’. which played an important role in the 1971 war.

INS Vikrant Features

-INS Vikrant is worth 20 thousand crores.
-Its different parts are made in 18 states.
-This vessel is 262 meters long and 62 meters wide.
-Its maximum speed is 28 knots.
-There are about 2200 compartments in Vikrant.
-The ship can operate 30 aircraft simultaneously.
-The crew is enough to accommodate 1,600 members.
-The design from the front is such that there is no problem in the aircraft take-off.
-A fleet of MiG-29K fighters and Ka-31 helicopters will be deployed.
-2500 km long electric wire has been installed.
