Tokyo: Mirabai Chanu Wins a Silver in Weightlifting, India’s First Medal at Tokyo 2020.Mirabai Chanu is the first Indian female athlete after Karnam Malleswari to win an Olympic weightlifting medal.
India’s first superwomen weightlifter clinched the silver and became first Indian women to win an Olympic medal in Tokyo games in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event on Saturday. Mirabai started off with two good lifts in the snatch and a brilliant first lift in the clean and jerk assured her a silver medal. The Gold medal went to China’s Hou Zhihui, who was just too good on the day.
This is the first time India have won a medal on the opening day of the Olympic Games. This was India’s first weightlifting medal at the Olympic Games in more than 20 years, since Karnam Malleshwari in Sydney.
26-year-old Mirabai, who hails from Nongpok Kakching in Imphal, became the sixth female athlete to win a medal for India in this century. India has won 14 Olympic medals in the last two decades with women bagging 6 of them.
Her heroics in the Clean & Jerk category were only bettered by the gold medal winner, who set an Olympic record in that category as well with a 116kgs lift. Mirabai Chanu tried to best her by attempting a 117kgs lift, but was unable to do so in her final attempt in the Clean Jerk category.
