New Delhi: India not only outclassed the South Africans in the third T20I to keep the series alive. Rishabh Pant’s first win as a captain came at the right time, as the hosts ended their seven-match losing streak (across formats) against the Proteas. The visitors still have an advantage of 2-1 in the five-match T20I series. The focus has now shifted to Rajkot for the next encounter to be held on Friday.

Rishabh Pant has had a tough time as a captain after losing the first two matches of the ongoing series against South Africa, and he faced the backlash. In the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, and then an injury forced KL Rahul to withdraw. Team management had limited options and urged Pant to handle the young team.

However, the 23-year-old faced severe criticism from former players, and his poor batting performance bolstered the case. Pant’s bat remained silent in the third T20I, but Team India snatched an easy 48-run win to keep their chance of winning the series 3-2.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said that captaincy can sometimes affect your own performances because you start thinking more about the performances of your teammates rather than your own.

“People expect that Pant should fire from the first ball with boundaries and sixes, as he has been doing this for the last couple of years.” He needs to reflect on his own batting and address the technical issues as soon as possible.

Gavaskar, the legendary batter, said that the win in the 3rd T20I on Tuesday would be a sigh of relief and release some pressure from the current Indian skipper.

If India wins the fourth match at Rajkot on Friday, then the last encounter would be a do-or-die affair for both the sides. The Men in Blue have to keep momentum to stop the Proteas from taking away the series.
