Indonesia: At least 127 people killed and 180 injured after stampede at football match

Indonesia: On Sunday morning, Indonesia police chief Nico Afinta in East Java province said that 127 people were killed and 180 were injured when a crowd of people stampeded during a football match. The incident occurred during a football match of Indonesian top league BRI Liga 1 at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang Regency in East Java on Saturday night.

The incident occurred during a football match of Indonesian top league BRI Liga 1 at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang Regency in East Java on Saturday night.

Indonesia’s police chief in East Java province, told media that officials had to fire tear gas after supporters of the losing side attacked the pitch after the match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya, causing a stampede and There were cases of suffocation.

After this incident, the indonesia top league suspended games for a week following riots that killed at least 127 people and injured 180. The Arema FC team has also been banned from hosting for the rest of this season’s competition. Video footage posted on social media showed people running and body bags on the stadium pitch in Malang.

Indonesia’s Football Association (PSSI) issued a statement late on Saturday night regretting the incident and said a team has left for Malang to begin an investigation into what happened after the game.

The statement said, “PSSI regrets the actions of Arema supporters at Kanjuruhan Stadium. We are sorry and apologize to the families of the victims and all parties involved in the incident. For this PSSI immediately constituted an investigation team and immediately Left for Malang.”

Akhmad Hadian Lukita, president director of the league’s owner PT LIB, said, “We announced the decision after receiving instructions from the president of PSSI. We are doing this to respect everything and are waiting for the investigation process from PSSI. ”
