Indonesia Flood: Devastating flood wreaks havoc in Indonesia, 41 killed so far; 17 missing

Indonesia floods: The sudden flood on Sumatra Island of Indonesia has caused huge devastation. So far 41 people have died and 17 are missing due to the floods. After finding a large number of bodies in the last few days, rescue workers also searched for the bodies on Monday. National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Abdul Muhari said flooding hit mountainside villages along four districts of West Sumatra province just before midnight on Saturday, according to reports. Heavy rains have caused floods and landslides in Sumatra province.

National disaster management agency BNPB said in a statement that floods since Saturday night have left mudslides in Tanah Datar regency, affecting five subdistricts. Relief efforts were being hampered by bad weather, damaged roads and roads blocked by debris, he said. He said at least 19 people were injured in the floods and rescue workers were searching for 17 missing villagers. Late last year, 23 climbers were killed in the sudden eruption of Mount Merapi.

According to Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation, Merapi is known for sudden eruptions. Eruptions at Merapi are difficult to predict because the source is shallow and near the summit. Merapi Volcano has been active since an eruption in January 2024 that caused no casualties. It is one of more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia. Due to its location on the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, the country experiences seismic disturbances.
