New Delhi: Lakshya Sen, fresh from winning the historic Thomas Cup badminton championship, advanced to the quarterfinals of the ongoing BWF Super 500 Indonesia Open 2022 on Thursday, defeating Danish opponent Rasmus Gemke in two straight games, 21-18 and 21-15.
World No.9 Sen played some thrilling badminton on the court and crushed his opponent in 54 minutes. Gemke fought hard and never allowed Sen to earn easy points. But in the end, the Indian shuttler kept his nerve and got past the World No. 13 and moved on to the next round.
Currently, Sen has been in tremendous form. He did the same yet another time and never allowed his opponent to gain the upper hand throughout the match.
Sindhu set to face Tungjung
PV Sindhu, the golden girl of Indian badminton, is set to take on Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tungjung to reserve her berth in the quarterfinals of the women’s singles.
It will be Sindhu’s first tournament after her debacle in the semi-finals against World No.1 Akane Yamaguchi in the Thailand Open. In her first-round encounter at the Indonesia Masters on Wednesday, Sindhu eclipsed World No.22 Line Christophersen.
The Indian shuttler came back strongly after going down in the first set, and in the end, conquered her opponent in three sets, 18-21, 21-15, and 21-11.
Sindhu’s overall head-to-head record against Tungjung is excellent, as she defeated her in all their last six encounters. Both the shuttlers last met against each other in the 2019 Denmark Open, where Sindhu easily got past Tungjung, 22-10, 21-18.
