Indonesia: Strong earthquake of magnitude 5.5 hits Tobelo, no casualties reported

Strong earthquake tremors have been felt in Indonesia. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that earthquake tremors were felt 162 km northwest of Tobelo in Indonesia on Monday. Its intensity has been recorded at 5.5.

Jakarta: Earthquake tremors have been felt in Indonesia. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that earthquake tremors were felt 162 km northwest of Tobelo in Indonesia on Monday. Its intensity has been recorded at 5.5 on the Richter scale.

The earthquake occurred at 23:47:34 (UTC+05:30) and the epicenter was located at 2.881 N and 127.100 E respectively. According to USGS, the depth was found to be 12 km. As of now, there is no information about any casualty.

Tobelo is a city located on the eastern Indonesian island of Halmahera. Earlier on January 16, there was a 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia. The US Geological Survey said in an update on its website that the quake struck 40 kilometers southeast of the Indonesian city of Singkil. The earthquake was recorded at 03:59:58 (local time) at a depth of 37 km.

It is noteworthy that Indonesia is a country located in Southeast Asia and Oceania between the Indian and Pacific oceans. It includes more than 17,000 islands. Earthquake tremors have been felt here on a daily basis.
