The talk is in the air that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has been planning to introduce cricket to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The IOC has shortlisted cricket along with eight other sporting events.

The IOC invited the International Cricket Committee (ICC) to submit a presentation so that cricket may be considered as a sporting event in the Olympics.

The final verdict will be declared ahead of the IOC session in Mumbai in mid-2023. The other eight sports which are under consideration for the Olympics are: baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse, break dancing, karate, kick-boxing, squash, and motorsport.

The IOC has cleared the air that a total of 28 sporting disciplines will be part of the 2028 Los Angeles Games. The committee is ready to add new sports so that more focus can be given on youth.

To be considered for inclusion, a sport must meet several criteria, including cost and complexity reduction, attracting the best athletes, sports that are safe and globally appealing, the interest of host nations, gender equality, and sports that are clean and have long-term sustainability.

Cricket is a part of the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, with eight women’s teams participating in the T20 format. At the Olympic Games, it must feature both men and women.

ICC CEO Geoff Allardice said he was pleased with the way cricket is being treated in the Birmingham CWG and it has attracted a huge number of people to the showpiece.
