At around 8 o’clock in the night, people from Malbazar town and around the tea garden had arrived in large numbers for immersion with Durga idols on the banks of Mal river. Huge crowds gathered on both sides of the river. The administration team was constantly advising people to be alert through the mic. Despite this, some people took the car with the idol and reached the middle of the river, but after a while it happened which no one had even imagined.
The NDRF team was engaged in the rescue work till late in the night till around 1 pm. Jalpaiguri SP Devarshi Dutta confirmed the incident. He told, ‘The death toll in the accident may increase. So far 7 bodies have been recovered, while 10 injured have also been taken out. At present, relief and rescue work is going on and search is on for the missing people.
Jalpaiguri District Magistrate Momita Godra said, “People were swept away in the sudden floods. So far eight bodies have been recovered and we have rescued around 50 people.’ He said, ‘Search and rescue operation is on. NDRF, SDRF, police and local administration are engaged in rescue work.
Late night Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled the incident. Condoling the name of Narendra Modi on behalf of the PMO, it was written on Twitter, ‘Saddened by the accident during Durga Puja festival in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones.
