Jamia Violence Case: Delhi court discharges Sharjeel Imam, Asif Tanha in 2019 violence case

On Saturday, Saket Court of Delhi has acquitted Sharjeel Imam and Asif Iqbal Tanha in the 2019 Jamia violence case, giving great relief. However, he will still have to remain in jail due to several other cases.

New Delhi: On Saturday, Saket Court of Delhi has acquitted Sharjeel Imam and Asif Iqbal Tanha in the 2019 Jamia violence case, giving great relief. However, he will still have to remain in jail due to several other cases.

The violence erupted after clashes between police and people protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act. Sharjeel got bail in 2021.

A case has been registered against them under sections 143, 147, 148, 186, 353, 332, 333, 308, 427, 435, 323,341, 120B and 34 of the IPC for rioting and mobilizing unconstitutional mob.

However, Imam will still remain in jail as he has several cases registered against him in connection with the 2020 riots in East Delhi.

Sharjeel Imam and several others have been booked under the anti-terror law in the UAPA case for masterminding the February 2020 riots. 53 people were killed and over 700 were injured in the riots. Violence had erupted during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens. Imam was accused of delivering an inflammatory speech against the government on CAA and NRC at Jamia Millia Islamia University in December 2019.
