Jammu & Kashmir: Accused arrested by Srinagar Police in sacrilege incident at Khan Masjid Gojwara

An incident of sacrilege took place at Khan Masjid Gojwada in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. According to the police, Malura's accused Irshad Ahmed Mir threw the Quran into the water. Taking quick action on the matter, the police raided the whole night and arrested the accused.

Srinagar: An incident of sacrilege took place at Khan Masjid Gojwada in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. According to the police, Malura’s accused Irshad Ahmed Mir threw the Quran into the water. Taking quick action on the matter, the police raided the whole night and arrested the accused.

Srinagar Police said that the accused seems to be of unsound mind. A case under relevant sections has been registered at Nowhatta police station. Earlier in Hoshiarpur, a 9-year-old child was caught on the charge of sacrilege. On October 9, a nine-year-old boy was arrested for desecrating a religious text in a village in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur.

Mukerian Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kulwinder Singh Virk said that Tarsem Singh, the granthi of the gurdwara in village Bishanpur, noticed some torn pages of the Guru Granth Sahib on October 5, he immediately informed the Gurdwara committee chairman Amarjit Singh. The boy was produced in juvenile court, which sent him to a local correctional home.

The DSP said that further investigation is being done. In India, the cases related to sacrilege are very sensitive. Such incidents sometimes give rise to major law and order issues. In 2015, a major violent protest took place in Moga district of Punjab over sacrilege.
