Jammu-Srinagar National Highway blocked due to heavy landslide near Khooni Nala , traffic halted for 10 hours

Jammu-Kashmir: On Monday, Traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar Highway was disrupted for close to 10 hours after landslides near Khooni Nala. in a post on X, J&K Traffic Police said, “Jammu-Srinagar NHW (NH-44) is still blocked, restoration work is in progress. People are advised to avoid journey on NH-44 till the clearance work is completed, keep cooperating with Traffic Police."

Jammu-Kashmir: On Monday, Traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar Highway was disrupted for close to 10 hours after landslides near Khooni Nala. in a post on X, J&K Traffic Police said, “Jammu-Srinagar NHW (NH-44) is still blocked, restoration work is in progress. People are advised to avoid journey on NH-44 till the clearance work is completed, keep cooperating with Traffic Police.”

According to the authorities, a landslide took place in the Khooni Nala area of Ramban district of the Jammu division at 10:30 pm which led to the blockade. The National Highway remained shut to vehicular traffic.

Earlier on X, police had infomred that both sides traffic stopped on Jammu-Srinagar NHW due to landslide near Khooni Nalah, People are advised to keep co-operate with Traffic Police. An operation is underway to clear the roads at the National Highway Authority (NHA) 144 at the moment.

Interestingly, the area is prone to landslides where heavy rocks and boulders fall from the mountains, blocking the roads. Authorities issued an advisory appealing travellers to avoid this route after the recent landslides. The authorities are hopeful that they will clear the debris and help in smooth flow of traffic on the highway.

Earlier on March 31, officials said that the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway 44 was blocked at Mehad Dalwas and Kishtwar Pathar, Ramban due to mudslides and stone falls. After the improvement in the weather, the authorities have intensified efforts to resume traffic movement on the Jammu-Srinagar NH.

The 270-km-long highway, the only all-weather link connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country, remained closed. In a similar incident, traffic on the highway was affected on March 2 after mudslides and stone falls. According to officials, multiple landslides occurred between Banihal and Ramban districts, blocking the highway.

Meanwhile, several high altitude areas of Gulmarg and Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir received fresh snowfall while the plains of the valley received rain. Meteorological department officials said on Saturday that high altitude areas of Kashmir, including the famous ski resort Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, received fresh snowfall during the night.
