In a disturbing sequence of events, a 21-year-old stage performer has come forward with allegations of being gang-raped by three men in Jharkhand’s Palamu district, just days after the assault on a Spanish woman in Dumka. The survivor, who hails from Chhattisgarh, had travelled to Palamu to participate in an orchestra event.
The survivor, currently undergoing treatment at a government hospital, recounted to the police that Golu, one of the accused, operates an orchestra group in Palamu. Initially invited to perform at a wedding, the event was canceled, and the two sisters were brought to Golu’s home. According to the survivor, Golu offered them cold drinks, which she believes were spiked. Despite being intoxicated, she remained conscious as Golu and two others allegedly raped her.
Speaking from her hospital bed, the survivor stated, “It was dawn. They had mixed something in my drink and three men raped me.”
Orchestra shows, a popular form of stage entertainment in small Indian towns, involve singers, musicians, and sometimes dancers performing on indoor or outdoor stages. The survivor’s account sheds light on the potential vulnerabilities artists face when collaborating with musical troupes and traveling to other states for performances.
This harrowing incident follows closely after the assault on a Spanish couple in Jharkhand, where the woman was also reportedly gang-raped. Authorities revealed that seven individuals were involved in that incident, with three arrests made so far. The Spanish couple is currently receiving medical care at a local hospital.
Expressing concern over the deteriorating law and order situation, BJP MLA Anant Ojha described the incidents as a “stain” on Jharkhand’s reputation, emphasizing the need for enhanced safety measures. In response, Jharkhand Minister Banna Gupta has assured that the state government is committed to taking strict action against the accused.
