J&K: Two terrorists neutralised after army foils infiltration bid along LoC in Kupwara, gunfight underway

Srinagar: As many as two terrorists were killed on Thursday in an encounter that broke out between armed forces and militants in the Machil sector, along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district. The infiltration attempt was thwarted by the Jammu and Kashmir Police and Intelligence agencies in a joint operation. The operation is currently in progress, said the officials.

According to a police spokesman, two terrorists were neutralised in the operation. “Based on a specific information provided by Kupwara Police, an #encounter has started in Machhal sector in which two #terrorists have been killed so far. Operation underway,” police spokesman wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Earlier, the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps of the Army said in a post on the social media platform “Infiltration attempt foiled,” the post said, adding that the operation was ongoing.

“OP KUPWARA | In a Joint Operation launched by #IndianArmy, @JmuKmrPolice & Intelligence agencies on 26 Oct 23, an infiltration bid has been foiled by alert troops along the #LoC in #Kupwara sector. Operations in progress,” Chinar Corps of Indian Army posted on X.

It’s the 13th infiltration attempt thwarted by the security forces this year in Jammu – a maximum of them were foiled in the Machil sector and Poonch, Rajouri area. Around 28 infiltrators have been killed including two in today’s operation.

Earlier on October 13, the security forces detected and destroyed a suspicious object in Kupwara. The Army found two suspicious small gas cylinders, suspected to be IEDs, on the roadside at Odipora in the Kralgund area of the north Kashmir district. According to the officials, a bomb disposal squad was called to the spot which later destroyed the suspicious object. There was no loss of life or damage to property during the destruction of the suspicious object, they added.
