Justice UU Lalit sworn in as 49th Chief Justice of India

Justice Uday Umesh Lalit took oath as the 49th Chief Justice of India on Saturday.

New Delhi: On Saturday, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit took oath as the 49th Chief Justice of India.

The oath-taking ceremony took place at Rashtrapati Bhavan. President of India Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office. On this occasion, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers and other dignitaries were present at the ceremony.

Justice NV Ramana, the predecessor of Justice Lalit , was also present when he took the oath of office.

After the swearing-in ceremony, Justice Laliit touched his father’s feet. The 90-year-old father of the new CJI of India, Umesh Ranganath Lalit, served as a High Court judge after a prolonged career as an advocate. He used to practise law in his home state of Maharashtra.

Lalit’s wife, Amita Lalit, who along with her two sons, Harshad and Shreeyash, runs a school in Noida, was also present on that occasion.

Previously, Justice Lalit had served as a judge of the Supreme Court of India. Prior to becoming a judge, he practised as a senior lawyer at the Supreme Court.
