New Delhi: The controversy erupted across the country over Canadian-based filmmaker Leena Manimekalai’s new documentary, film”Kaali’s poster.” The poster of the movie depicts the goddess Kaali smoking a cigarette and holding a rainbow flag, which is dubbed as a “pride flag,” a recognised symbol of the LGBTQ+ community all over the world.
Following several FIRS filed against her, she issued a fresh tweet in her defence, in which two people are smoking in the dress of Lord Shiva and a Hindu goddess. She has put a small caption under the photo: “Elsewhere”. The photo is almost identical to the contentious poster of Kaali.
The moment Leena Manimekalai released the poster, she had to face backlash on social media, and political parties did not remain far behind in joining in this fray.
Though Manimekalai said the documentary was about a woman strolling in the streets of Canada’s Toronto, several right-wing groups strongly opposed the documentary film and lodged complaints against the director of the film, which finally helped in removing the presentation of the documentary at Canada’s Aga Khan Museum.
The original tweet of the movie poster has been removed on Twitter due to hue and cry. Leena Manimekalai, the filmmaker has called the movie funny. She has been criticised by all section for hurting religious sentiments.
