Renowned Kannada author and rationalist KS Bhagwan sparked controversy when he said that Lord Ram used to drink wine with Sita.
Thiruvananthapuram: Renowned Kannada author and rationalist KS Bhagwan sparked controversy when he asserted that, according to Valmiki’s Ramayana, Lord Ram would sit with his wife Sita and sip wine in the afternoon.
Speaking at an event in Mandya, Karnataka, on Friday, Bhagwan claimed that Lord Rama “was not perfect” since he neglected his wife after sending her into the jungle and cut off the head of a Shudra who was sitting in penance under a tree.
There are discussions regarding building a Rama Rajya. It is clear that (Lord) Ram was not ideal if one reads the Uttara Kanda of Valmiki’s Ramayana. He ruled for only 11 years, not for 11,000 years, according to KS Bhagawan.
Bhagwan has made controversial comments about Lord Ram. He asserted similar remarks in 2019, claiming that Sita was forced to drink ‘intoxicants’ by Lord Ram.
Due to his contentious statements, the rationalist has been the target of right-wing organisations. He also allegedly received death threats following the murder of Prof. MM Kalburgi, a renowned Kannada epigrapher and recipient of the National Sahitya Akademi Award.
He further added, “I want to say to the individuals who killed Professor Kalburgi, Govind Pansare, and Narendra Dabholkar and who are now threatening to kill me that you can attack us and tear us to pieces, but our work will live on.” Earlier, he said, “They can kill me, but it won’t change my stance.”
