Kanpur youth picked up by cops for theft dies, family alleges Police torture

Kanpur: Days after the custodial death of Altaf Miyan, 21, in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj, now the Kanpur Police is being accused of torturing a youth to death in police custody, as per deceased’s kin.

Jitendra, alias Kallu, son of Tej Narayan, was picked for interrogation by the police on November 13, on charges of theft.

The deceased youth was a Madhavpuram resident, who used to work as a labour in Mumbai and had come home on Diwali holidays but before he could go back to Mumbai, the police picked him up. As per police report, a resident of Jitendra’s neighbourhood in Kalyanpur, had filed a complaint against him, accusing him of stealing Rs 12 lakh on November 4 after which, on the basis of suspicion, Police picked him for interrogation on November 14, in view of the criminal history of the deceased and his brother.

On Monday night, Panki Police Station outpost in-charge had asked Jitendra’s relatives to take him home, saying that he had a stomach ache.

However, upon reaching home Jitendra told his family that the police had beaten him mercilessly, as per Jitendra’s brother and sister, who also complained of blue marks of severe beating on Jitendra’s body.

The kin of the deceased have alleged that Jitendra’s condition had been deteriorating continuously after he returned home and he had also suffered internal injuries due to the beating by the police, Jitendra’s siblings alleged.

Though, critically injured Jitendra was subsequently admitted to Kanpur’s Hallett Hospital, he passed away late on Monday night.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has now been sent for a post-mortem by the police.

Deputy Commissioner of Police West BGTS Moorthy told the media, “The case of death of a youth has come to light. The body has been sent for post-mortem. Along with this, the whole matter is being investigated. The allegations made by the family members will be investigated.”

This custodial death incident comes a week after a 21-year-old young man, accused of running away with a girl, had died under contentious circumstances while in UP police custody in Kasganj district.
