Karachi: 11 killed, several injured as massive fire erupts in shopping mall, several feared trapped

Karachi: On Saturday, At least 11 people lost their lives and several others were feared trapped as a massive fire erupted in a multi-storey shopping mall at Rashid Minhas Road of Karachi. After receiving information about this incident, the fire tenders reached on the spot.

After this incident, the rescue officials said the fire broke out on the fourth floor and engulfed the other floors of the shopping mall. The fire erupted in the RJ shopping mall building at around 6 am in the morning and was finally extinguished after hours of efforts involving a dozen fire tenders, two snorkels and a water bowser.

According to the information, the officials faced difficulty in the rescue operation due to huge smoke in the building. Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui confirmed in a post on social media platform X that at least nine bodies had been transferred to local hospitals after the fire.

Rescue officials evacuated about 46 people from the building. There is a possibility of more people still trapped in the shopping mall. The injured are being taken to the nearest hospital by rescue officials.

According to rescue and fire department officials, the condition of seven injured is critical. Two snorkels, eight fire tenders and two bowsers were called for the rescue operation. Fire brigade officials said the fire was caused by an electric generator installed on the roof.

Due to the massive fire, many shops were burnt to ashes. Electricity was also switched off in the area. Officials said the fire has been brought under control and the cooling process is currently underway.
