Karnataka: 24 new ministers join in Siddaramaiah govt cabinet, including one woman

Bangalore: A week after the formation of the Congress government in Karnataka under the leadership of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, 24 MLAs were sworn in as ministers today. Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot administered the oath of office and secrecy to the ministers. Karnataka government can have 34 ministers. Ten ministers, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, were sworn in on May 20.

Bangalore: A week after the formation of the Congress government in Karnataka under the leadership of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, 24 MLAs were sworn in as ministers today. Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot administered the oath of office and secrecy to the ministers. Karnataka government can have 34 ministers. Ten ministers, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, were sworn in on May 20.

The swearing-in ceremony began at 11.45 am at the Raj Bhavan. In view of the oath ceremony, security was increased in and around the Raj Bhavan. Senior MLAs H K Patil, Krishna Byregowda, N Cheluvarayaswamy, K Venkatesh, Dr HC Mahadevappa, State Congress Working President Eshwar Khandre and former State Congress President Dinesh Gundu Rao are among the MLAs who took oath as Ministers today .

Among those made ministers by the Congress, there are six Lingayat and four Vokkaliga MLAs. At the same time, three MLAs belonging to Scheduled Castes, two Scheduled Tribes and five other backward classes have been made ministers. Brahmins have also got representation in the Karnataka cabinet in the form of Dinesh Gundu Rao. Seven MLAs each from Old Mysore and Kalyan Karnataka regions, six from Kittur Karnataka region and two from Central Karnataka took oath as ministers.

An official statement issued on Friday night said that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has maintained balance in the cabinet by paying due respect to senior and junior legislators as well as taking care of caste and regional equations. The statement also said that there would be eight Lingayats in the cabinet. In these, representation has been given to various sub-sects of the community.

Ministers in Karnataka have not yet been allocated portfolios. Minister KH Muniyappa said that the portfolios of the ministers can be announced by Saturday evening. Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar were in the national capital for the last three days and held several rounds of discussions with the party leadership on cabinet expansion.

The names of 24 ministers were finalized after hours-long talks between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar with top central leaders, including All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretaries KC Venugopal and Randeep Surjewala. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and former party chief Rahul Gandhi finalized the list of ministers.
