New Delhi: Karnataka Food and Civil Supplies Minister Umesh Vishwanath Katti died of cardiac arrest on Tuesday night. he was 61. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter. According to sources, the minister felt chest pain at his Dollars Colony home and collapsed. He was then rushed to Ramaiah hospital, where he breathed his last.

CM expressed grief

CM Bommai tweeted, “Deeply saddened by the untimely demise of my close colleague, Karnataka Forest Minister Umesh Katti. The state has lost an accomplished diplomat, active leader and loyal public servant in his demise.” He was handling the portfolios: Forest and Food and Civil Supplies.His family consists of wife, son and daughter.

Mr Bommai also said, “I have lost a very close friend of mine. He was a brother to me. He had some heart issues, but we never thought he will pass away so soon. He has done a lot of work for the state. He handled several portfolios efficiently. It is a huge loss for the state. He has left a huge vacuum which is very difficult to fill up.”

“His (Umesh Katti) body will be shifted by air ambulance. All procedures will be done after public viewing till 2 pm at Sankeshwara. The last rites will be performed with state honours at Bagewadi Belagavi. A holiday has been announced in schools and colleges today in Belagavi,” he told the media.

Several cabinet colleagues of Bommai including Water Resources Minister Govind Karjol, Health Minister K Sudhakar and several BJP leaders rushed to the hospital on receiving the news. Leader of the Opposition and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah tweeted, “Concerning the passing away of Food and Civil Supplies Minister Umesh Katti. Deeply saddened to hear. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family. May his soul rest in peace.” One of the senior ministers of Belagavi, Umesh Katti has been an eight-time MLA from Hukkeri assembly constituency of the district. He had expressed his desire to become the Chief Minister and was often in the news for his separate North-Karnataka state stand.

He entered politics after the death of his father Vishwanath Katti in 1985. Before joining the BJP in 2008, Katti was with the Janata Party, Janata Dal, JD(U) and JD(S). He had earlier served as a minister in the cabinet headed by J H Patel, BS Yediyurappa, D V Sadananda Gowda and Jagadish Shettar.
