New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Shivamogga Airport in Karnataka on Monday. Earlier, PM Modi also inspected the model of Shivamogga airport. This is the Prime Minister’s fifth visit to Karnataka this year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted former CM and senior BJP leader BS Yediyurappa at the inauguration of Shivamogga airport. BS Yediyurappa is also celebrating his 80th birthday today.
After the inaugurating the Shivamogga airport, PM Modi said, “Shivamogga airport is grand and beautiful. At this airport, one can see the combination of Karnataka’s tradition and technology. This is not just an airport. It is the drive for a new journey of the dreams of the youth of this area,” PM Narendra Modi said.
This aerodrome has been built at a cost of Rs 450 crore, and will cater to the needs of the people of central Karnataka with better air connectivity. Apart from this, the operation of the airport will help in the development of the region in various sectors like tourism, IT industry establishment and others. PM Modi wrote on Twitter, “The airport in Shivamogga will boost commerce, connectivity and increase tourism.”
According to media reports, the passenger terminal building of Shivamogga airport can handle 300 passengers per hour and will serve as the gateway to Malnad area. It has been constructed on 662.38 acres of land and has taxiways, aprons, approach roads, peripheral roads and compound walls, apart from runways, terminal buildings, air traffic control (ATC) towers and fire station buildings.
The foundation stone of the Shivamogga airport was laid in June 2020 by BS Yeddyurappa, the then Chief Minister of Karnataka. The Indian Air Force (IAF) had landed one of its aircraft at the newly constructed airport on Tuesday. Yediyurappa had said earlier this month that a suggestion to name the Shivamogga airport after national poet Kuvempu has been sent to the Centre.
It is being told that this airport will not only meet the demand of the people of Shivamogga but also of the entire Central Karnataka. This will give wings to the aspirations of the youth and lakhs of employment opportunities will be created for them. Along with this, the Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone of two new railway projects. A new line will be built on the Shivamogga-Shikaripura-Ranebennur route and, secondly, a new coach depot at Kotegangagru railway station.
Developed at a cost of Rs 990 crore, the new railway line will provide better connectivity between the Malnad region and the Bengaluru-Mumbai mainline. Also, to facilitate new trains from Shivamogga and reduce the load from other such facilities in the zone, a coaching depot is being built at a cost of over Rs 100 crore. Apart from this, Belagavi Railway Station is being developed at a cost of about Rs 190 crore.
