Kazim Khan, Congress leader, plans to support BJP in Rampur byelections, apologises to party

Rampur: Congress decision not to field its candidates in the forthcoming two LoK Sabha bypolls in Rampur and Azamgarh has turned its Rampur candidate, Nawab Kazim Ali Khan, furious.

He has made it clear that in this situation he is ready to support the BJP’s Ghanshyam Singh Lodhi. He apologised to the Congress general secretary and the party’s UP in-charge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, for his unusual decision.

Kazim Ali Khan, the veteran politician, was a Cabinet minister during the reign of Mayawati’s government and was elected five times as an MLA but failed to win his 2022 UP assembly polls on the Congress ticket. He lost to the Samajwadi Party’s senior leader, Azam Khan.

He wanted to contest from the Rampur constituency on the Congress ticket, but the party’s decision not to field a candidate really miffed him. The by-election is scheduled for June 23, with the results to be announced on June 26.

The political relationship between Kazim and Azam Khan is soaring. Their political feud has been going on for many years.

I am at present associated with Congress and will remain with the party. Despite an unfavourable political atmosphere against the party in UP, I contested the 2022 assembly polls as the party’s candidate. I am free to support and vote for anyone of my choice,” he said.

Kazim took this decision after the BJP candidate Lodhi reached the former’s Noor Mahal Palace on Monday evening to meet him and his son Haider Ali Khan. Lodhi also talked to other political foes of the Azam Khan group, including an ex-Congress MLA from Rampur assembly seat, Afroz Ali Khan, who dethroned Azam in the 1996 assembly polls.
