Kerala: 26-year-old doctor dies by suicide over ‘dowry demand’, probe ordered

Kerala: Kerala Health Minister Veena George directed the Women and Child Development Department on Wednesday to investigate and submit a report into the suicide of a female PG doctor at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. The victim was identified as Shahana.

Police recovered a suicide note which mentioned that ‘every one needs money’.It is alleged that the 26-year-old doctor committed suicide due to demand for dowry. Shahana, a PG student in the surgery department at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, was found dead at her rented apartment near the institute on Tuesday morning.

An official said that her relatives alleged that she died by suicide after her male friend, who is also a PG doctor, withdrew from the marriage proposal. This was suspected to have forced her to take the extreme measure, they alleged.

Giving details about this incident, officials said that his family reportedly demanded significant dowry in the form of gold, land and a BMW car. Shahana’s family was unable to meet these demands. Subsequently, the male doctor, who was also a representative of the Medical PG Doctors Association, ended the relationship.

The father of victims, who worked in the Middle East, died recently. Kerala Women’s Commission chairperson advocate Satidevi, who met Shahana’s mother at her home, demanded a proper investigation into the issue. Women’s Commission will ask for a report from the police.

Satidevi said, if the boy’s family demanded dowry, a case would be registered against them under the Dowry Prevention Act. The State Minorities Commission also initiated a case in this regard at its own level based on media reports.

While the police registered a case for unnatural death and started a probe, state health minister Veena George asked the women and child department to probe the matter and submit a report. Meanwhile, the Medical PG Doctors Association has removed the accused doctor from all responsibilities of its organization.
