Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan, arrested on terror charges, to walk out of jail today after over 2 years

Journalist Siddique, who was arrested on various charges, is being released today after spending 2 years, 3 months and 26 days in jail. On 5 October 2020, four people including Siddique Kappan were arrested from Mathura toll plaza. The UP police had said that Siddique Kappan has a connection with the PFI and the four accused were planning to spread violence in Hathras.

New Delhi: Journalist Siddiqui, who was arrested on various charges, is being released today after spending 2 years, 3 months and 26 days in jail. On 5 October 2020, four people including Siddique Kappan were arrested from Mathura toll plaza. The UP police had said that Siddiqui Kappan has a connection with the PFI and the four accused were planning to spread violence in Hathras.

Journalist Kappan Siddiqui Kappan, arrested on several charges including inciting the public after the Hathras incident in Uttar Pradesh, is to be released from jail today. On December 23, Siddiqui Kappan was granted bail in Ed’s money laundering case from the Lucknow bench of the High Court. He is getting released today after spending 2 years, 3 months and 26 days in jail.

On 5 October 2020, four people including Siddique Kappan were arrested from Mathura toll plaza. The UP police had said that Siddiqui Kappan has a connection with the PFI and the four accused were planning to spread violence in Hathras.

The Supreme Court granted conditional bail to Kappan. Kappan will have to stay in Delhi for the next 6 weeks after his release from the Uttar Pradesh jail, after which he will be able to go to Kerala.

Apart from this, every Monday he will have to attend the police station, as well as surrender his passport. Kappan was booked under various sections of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, IT Act, Indian Penal Code. At that time, Kappan was allegedly going to cover the incident of gangrape and murder of a girl in Hathras. After getting relief from the Supreme Court, Kappan was also allowed to apply for bail in the proceedings initiated against him under money laundering.

Four people, including Kappan, were arrested by the UP Police in October 2020 from Mathura. Police said that Kappan is associated with the radical group Popular Front of India (PFI). They were going to hatch a conspiracy to spread riots in Hathras. At the same time, Kappan said that after the gangrape-murder of the girl in Hathras, he was going to cover the case on the spot. Kappan was jailed under IPC sections 153A (promoting enmity between groups), 295A (hurting religious feelings), 124A (sedition), 120B (conspiracy), UAPA.
