However, the victory margin was so narrow that it has not improved their net run rate (NRR). They need to win their last match against the Punjab Kings by a huge margin, and then think about going ahead.

KKR gear up against LSG

The focus has been shifted to Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai, for tonight’s encounter between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). KKR are in a must-win situation to remain alive in this edition of the IPL. In comparison to KKR, LSG is currently breathing easier.

LSG were first in the points table last week but have now dropped to third. The consecutive losses have put them in a doldrum situation as they haven’t managed to seal their place in the playoffs stage yet.

The back-to-back defeats naturally diminished their morale. The final league game against KKR is crucial for them to secure their place in the next stage. But uncertainty always looms in cricket.

KKR, in contrast, sits in a completely different position. Back-to-back victories have given a new lease of life to the Kolkata side, but a win against LSG in tonight’s fixture won’t be enough for KKR to cement their position in the playoffs. In the end, net run rate will play a decisive role because several teams’ fates are depending on it.

LSG would like to bat first if KL Rahul wins the toss tonight. The Lucknow side have the best record of batting first in this edition and the poorest record of chasing amongst all teams except MI and CSK. However, LSG suffered their last four defeats during the chase.

Important facts

  • This season, KL Rahul has been dismissed for 10 runs or less six times. In fact, four of those runs came in his last five innings.
  • Shreyas Iyer has scored just 115 runs in his last 6 innings, at an average of 19.17 and a SR of 104.55.
  • Sunil Narine’s economy rate is outstanding this season. It is 5.48 this season.

Both the captains are eager to give more than 100 percent in tonight’s encounter.

LSG skipper KL Rahul said, “When you lose wickets early, it puts pressure on you.” We have lost three or four games in the powerplay as a batting unit. We have to make sure we find a way to stay in there, play quality bowlers, and give a good start”.

Rahul’s counterpart, Shreyas Iyer, stated that “We don’t have anything to lose right now.”

It seems that cricket fans will get a chance to watch some thrilling cricket in tonight’s encounter.
