New Delhi: Jailed Khalistani supporter Amritpal Singh will take the oath of office in Parliament today. He will be brought from Assam to Delhi today. Waris Punjab De organization chief Amritpal has won from Khadur Sahib Lok Sabha seat of Punjab in the recent parliamentary elections. Under the National Security Act, Amritpal, who was lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam along with 9 associates, has got parole for four days. So that he can take oath as a Lok Sabha member.
Amritpal Singh has been given custodial parole for four days, starting from July 5. Amritpal will be brought from Assam to Delhi by ‘military aircraft’ and then taken back. The Punjab Police team has reached Assam to bring Amritpal. During the parole period, Amritpal can neither talk to the media on any issue, nor address the media, nor give any statement. According to the court order, even his family members cannot give any statement in the media.
who is amritpal singh?
Amritpal Singh Sandhu is a radical Indian pro-Khalistan separatist, a self-styled Sikh preacher and politician. He is a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha representing the constituency of Khadoor Sahib since 2024. Amritpal Singh is a supporter of Khalistan and the head of ‘Waris Punjab De’. Amritpal Singh was born on 17 January 1993 in Jallupur Kheda of Amritsar district of Punjab. Amritpal Singh’s father’s name is Tarsem Singh. Amritpal, mainly a resident of Jallupur Kheda in Amritsar, moved to Dubai in 2012 to join his family’s transport business. Then Amritpal Singh was only 19 years old.
After which he returned to India in the year 2022. But Amritpal Singh first came into the headlines on 23rd February. When he attacked Ajnala police station with thousands of supporters to free his close friend. Six policemen were injured in this attack.
Last year too, Amritpal’s supporters had vandalized the Model Town Gurudwara in Jalandhar and set fire to chairs and sofas. Supporters said that this is against the teachings of Sikhism. Apart from this, the Gurudwara located in Biharipura village of Kapurthala district was also vandalized. Amritpal Singh’s activism in Punjab is just less than two years. But in a very short time it has created its base class in entire Punjab. The reason behind this is to spread the idea of making Punjab Khalistan internally along with opposition to addiction and drugs.
Who is Engineer Rashid?
Sheikh Abdul Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, is a Kashmiri politician and Member of Parliament from Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir, India. Earlier he was Member of the Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir, from the Langate constituency in Handwara. The name of Rashid, a former MLA, cropped up during the investigation of Kashmiri businessman Zahoor Watali, who the NIA had arrested for allegedly funding terrorist groups and separatists in the Kashmir valley.
The NIA had filed a charge sheet against several individuals, including Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik, Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin in the case. Malik was awarded life imprisonment by a trial court in 2022 after he pleaded guilty to the charges.
Singh styled himself after slain Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and is in jail along with nine of his associates under the National Security Act. Besides them, TMC’s Shatrughan Sinha is also yet to be sworn in as a member of the Lower of House of Parliament.
Sheikh Abdul Rashid, facing terror funding charges, will also take oath as a Lok Sabha member on Friday. Rashid, who was elected MP from Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir, is lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail in a terrorism financing case. He is also known as Engineer Rashid. Rashid has been given two hours’ custodial parole to take the oath, which does not include the travel time from Tihar to Parliament. During the parole period, he can neither talk to the media on any issue, nor address the media, nor make any statement.
