Kochi-Bound Air India Express Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Bengaluru Due to Engine Fire

An Air India Express flight heading from Bengaluru to Kochi was forced to make an emergency landing back at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport late Saturday night. This urgent action was taken after a fire was detected in one of the aircraft’s engines, according to a statement from Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) on Sunday.

The flight, carrying 179 passengers and six crew members, encountered the issue minutes after take-off. The crew promptly notified Air Traffic Control, which declared a full-scale emergency. Fortunately, all passengers and crew were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported.

Immediate Response and Fire Extinguished

Upon the aircraft’s return to Bengaluru, ground services swiftly extinguished the fire. BIAL’s spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating, “On May 18, 2024, IX 1132 from Bengaluru to Kochi made an emergency landing at BLR Airport at 23:12 hrs, due to a reported fire in one of the engines.” The spokesperson also noted that all emergency protocols were followed, ensuring the safety of everyone on board.

Air India Express Statement

An Air India Express spokesperson explained that the flight opted to return to Bengaluru as a precaution after suspected flames were observed from the right engine. “The crew executed a safe evacuation with no injuries to any guests. We regret the inconvenience caused and are arranging alternative travel for our passengers,” the spokesperson said.

Air India Express assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted in collaboration with aviation regulators to determine the cause of the engine fire.
