Kolkata: According to the recently released National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) annual report, Kolkata emerged as the safest city in India for the third consecutive year, recording the least number of cognisable offences per lakh population among metropolises. Last year also Kolkata was at the bottom in the list. With the release of this year’s data, Kolkata has retained its position four times in the last five years: 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022. In the year 2019, NCRB had claimed that it had not received the state data.
With a score of 86.5 (number of cognisable crimes recorded per 1 lakh people), Kolkata’s latest figures are even better than last year, when its score was 103.4. Pune ranks second in the list with a score of 280.7, followed by Hyderabad (299.2), Coimbatore (430), Chennai (450.1) and Mumbai (483.9). Delhi city has the worst situation in terms of crime. The number of crimes here is 1952.5 per lakh people.
Cognisable crimes are those for which cases are registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and SLL (Special and Local Laws).
After Delhi, Kochi city of Kerala is in critical condition. The crime rate here is 1358.2. The crime rate in Indore is 1251 and in Surat it is 1206. Whereas in terms of women’s safety, metropolitan Kolkata is at third place. The rate of crime against women here is 27.8. Coimbatore is the safest city in the country for women with 12.9. Chennai is in second place. Idore, Delhi and Jaipur have the worst situation in terms of women’s safety. The rate of crime against women here is 239, 186 and 174.
The rankings were issued after comparison among 19 cities with over 20 lakh population. Kolkata, however, recorded an expansion in crimes against women as the number of cases rose from 1,783 in 2021 to 1,890 in 2022, the report stated.
This year, the eastern metropolis also sees a drop in violent crimes with only 34 murder cases being reported, down from 45 last year.
According to the report, Kolkata registered 11 rapes in 2022, the same number reported in 2021.
The NCRB report ‘Crime in India 2022’ is based on data collected from 36 states and Union territories and central agencies.
