Rome: Eight people died on the tourist island of Ischia in Italy due to a landslide caused by heavy rain that engulfed some buildings, as stated by infrastructure minister Matteo Salvini.
“The Ischia avalanche has claimed the lives of eight people.” Rescue teams have arrived on the spot, and they are working in challenging circumstances, he said. Previously, the report stated that thirteen people had gone missing as a result of the landslides.
The fire department said in a first update that “a landslide consumed a house” at Casamicciola Terme, in the north of the island, and that “searches are underway for probable missing persons.”
However, ANSA and AGI news agencies reported that 13 people were missing after the early morning landslide.
As per the media report, a family with a husband and wife and a new infant who lived close to where the landslide occurred was among the missing. The mud dragged cars down the hill, with at least one vehicle being swept into the sea, saving two people from that vehicle, as confirmed by the fire service.
