Landslide wreak havoc in Sikkim: Devastating floods, landslide trapped over 1200 tourists; 9 killed

In Mangan district of North Sikkim, nature wreaked such havoc that life became disrupted. More than 1,200 tourists, including 15 foreign nationals, are stranded due to massive landslides triggered by incessant torrential rains.

Sikkim landslide: In Mangan district of North Sikkim, nature wreaked such havoc that life became disrupted. More than 1,200 tourists, including 15 foreign nationals, are stranded due to massive landslides triggered by incessant torrential rains. According to reports, 9 people have died in the hill state due to the sudden natural disaster. Properties were damaged and road connectivity, electricity and food supplies and mobile networks were disrupted in many areas.

“As per reports received, around 1,200 domestic and 15 foreign tourists (two from Thailand, two from Nepal) were stranded due to road blockage due to heavy rains and landslides,” Sikkim Tourism and Civil Aviation Department Principal Secretary C S Rao said in a statement. Three from Bangladesh, 10 from Bangladesh are stranded in Lachung in Mangan district. The situation has worsened in many parts of Sikkim and the Melli Stadium in the southern part of the state has been submerged due to the swollen Teesta river.

CM held a high level meeting

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang chaired a high-level meeting in Minto King to take stock of the situation following landslides caused by heavy rains. The hilly state has been badly affected by landslides. Local authorities have asked stranded tourists to stay at their respective places and avoid taking risks.

The official said there is sufficient stock of ration for all the stranded tourists. He said the Chief Secretary’s office has started talks with the Center to bring all the tourists by air depending on the weather conditions.
