Lawyer from Punjab arrested for brutally thrashing his 73-year-old mother, with wife and son

Chandigarh: The police have arrested accused Ankur Verma, a lawyer by profession, for allegedly torturing and brutally thrashing his elderly mother in Ropar district of Punjab. Disturbing videos have also surfaced on social media, in which the man can be seen mercilessly thrashing her own mother.

Videos show the woman being tortured by her son, daughter-in-law and even her grandson. Arrest made after the victim’s daughter alerted the police to the alleged abuse, providing them with video evidence of the assault captured by CCTV cameras installed in the house.

73-year-old victim Asha Rani stayed in Punjab’s Ropar with her son, daughter and daughter-in-law. Her husband had died of a heart attack recently and he told her daughter that they used to assault her.

Reportedly, accused Ankur Verma, his wife Sudha and their minor son physically thrashed the Asha Rani multiple times. The incident came to light after she narrated her ordeal to her daughter, Deepshikha, who somehow managed to get the access of footage from the CCTV camera installed in Asha Rani’s room.

Later, when victim’s daughter Deepshikha watched the entire horror incident in recorded footage, she could not believe the brutality her mother was being subjected to.

The videos showed Verma slapping her mother several times, aggressively grabbing her mouth and pulling her by hair. In one of the clips, his wife and son were seen thrashing the victim.

The daughter approached her relatives and informed them about the problem. However, they did nothing as her accused brother is a lawyer. Deepshikha then reached out to a non-governmental organisation (NGO), which called the cops. The police finally rescued the elderly woman and arrested her son.

After learning about the incident, the police arrested Verma and charged him under Sections 327 (Voluntarily causing hurt to extort property), 342 (wrongful confinement), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the IPC and Section 24 of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act.

The incident triggers outrage in the community, leading to Verma’s expulsion from the Ropar Rotary Club and Bar Association District Ropar.
