New Delhi: Athlete PT Usha, known as India’s flying angel, has created history in the Indian Olympic Association elections on Saturday. PT Usha has been elected the first woman President of IOA. She has been elected president unopposed in the IOA elections.
With this, PT Usha has broken another 82 year old record. She is the first IOA president since 1960 who is a former sportsperson. Before him, Maharaja Yadwinder Singh (player) had been such a president. The Indian Olympic Association elections are overseen by Nageswara Rao, a former Supreme Court judge appointed by the Supreme Court.
The great athlete PT Usha has a total of 11 medals in the Asian Games, including four gold medals and seven silver medals. He won these medals in 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1994 Asian Games. Along with this, he has also won a total of 23 medals in the Asian Championships, including 14 gold medals, 6 silver medals and 3 bronze medals. PT Usha, 58, had finished fourth in the final of the 400m hurdles at the 1984 Olympics.
The factional political crisis in the IOA has also come to an end after PT Usha became the president of the Indian Olympic Association in the elections conducted under the supervision of former Supreme Court judge Nageswara Rao. Let us tell you that the International Olympic Committee had issued a warning to suspend the IOA in case the elections were not held this month. Actually, these elections were to be held in December 2021, but could not be completed due to factional politics.
PT Usha’s election as the president was decided in November itself, as she was the only candidate to file nomination for the post of president. He was not opposed by anyone. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the BJP in July. Since then, PT Usha, popularly known as ‘Udan Pari’, was being seen as a BJP candidate.
