Odisha Lightning: Incessant heavy rains led to lightning killing 10 people in six districts of Odisha, as the India Meteorological Department predicted the storm would continue in the state. According to the Odisha government, 1 in Angul, 2 in Bolangir, 1 in Boudh, 1 in Jagatsinghpur, 1 in Dhenkanal and 4 in Khordha have died and 3 have been injured.
Bhubaneshwar: Incessant heavy rainfall on Saturday led to lightning that claims 10 lives in six districts of Odisha, an official said. The India Meteorological Department predicted the storm would continue in several parts of the state in the next four days. According to the Odisha government, four people in Khurda district, two in Bolangir and one each in Angul, Boudh, Jagatsinghpur and Dhenkanal. Three persons in Khurda were also injured in lightning strikes, it added.
Heavy rain accompanied by lightning lashed the coastal region of Odisha, including the cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, the official said. A cyclonic circulation has activated the monsoon which caused heavy rainfall across the state, the statement said.
The Special Relief Commissioner write on X, “10 people killed and 3 people have been injured in 6 districts due to lightning on 2nd September”. Even before this in Odisha some people had died due to lightning. In May, three people, including a woman, lost their lives after being struck by lightning at different places under Sarnakula police limits in Nayagarh district.
Many districts of Odisha are currently engulfed by the crisis of heavy rains and lightning. According to the office of the Special Commissioner, many coastal areas of Odisha are witnessing lightning along with heavy rains.
Many teams are engaged for relief work. To save people, they are being taken to safer places. According to the Meteorological Department, 126 mm and 95 mm of rain have been recorded in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack in Odisha. Apart from this, the condition is bad in Kolkata also due to rain. Here one person died due to lightning. Due to cyclonic circulation and likely low pressure area, Southwest Monsoon, which remained weak over Odisha, will now give heavy rainfall during next three to four days.
