Lightning strikes claim six lives across Rajasthan; CM Bhajan Lal announces Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia

Jaipur: In a tragic incident, six people, including two students and a couple, were killed in lightning strikes in different parts of Rajasthan on Friday. The victims were from multiple districts where heavy rain and thunderstorms witnessed heavy rain and thunderstorms on Friday.

Following the devastating lightning strikes, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma ordered a total ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the families of those killed. This financial assistance includes Rs 4 lakh from the Department of Disaster Management and Relief through District Collectors and an additional Rs 1 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. This prompt action reflects the Government’s resolve to support the bereaved families and ease their financial burden.

Apart from financial assistance, the Chief Minister has also directed the officials to conduct a thorough assessment (Girdawari) of the crop damage caused by excessive rainfall and hailstorm in the affected areas. The objective of this measure is to determine the quantum of agricultural losses and prepare necessary compensation to farmers.

Additionally, authorities have issued safety advisories urging the public to seek shelter during the storm and avoid taking shelter in open fields or under trees, and stressed the importance of precautionary measures during such unpredictable weather conditions.

People of different age groups lost their lives due to lightning, including a 17-year-old student and a 25-year-old youth in Lalsot in Dausa and a couple working in their agricultural field in Sawai Madhopur, among others. In response to the increasing frequency of such incidents, the Meteorological Department issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for possible severe weather conditions in seven districts, highlighting the need for increased awareness and preparedness among residents.

This tragic incident not only brings to light the unpredictable nature of weather events, but also underlines the critical need for effective disaster management strategies and public awareness campaigns.

As the state mourns the loss of its citizens, the collective efforts of the government, weather experts and the community will be crucial in reducing the impact of such natural disasters in future. Commitment to providing timely assistance and ensuring safety of the population remains a paramount concern as Rajasthan goes through these challenging times.
