Loan apps harass women by using Deepfake images in order to extort money: Singer Chinmayi’s claim

Mumbai: The acute impact of misuse of artificial intelligence (AI), especially in the creation of Deepfake videos, is raising a storm. After a shocking Deepfake video of actress Rashmika Mandanna raised concerns over the dangers of artificial intelligence, singer Chinmayi Sripaada alleged that such videos are being used to harass not only celebrities but also common people. The singer, in a post in support of the actor, called for legal action against misuse of such AI technology and also expressed concern over women being “the next weapon of extortion, blackmail and rape”.

In support of the actor, Chinmayi in a post, called for legal action against those who misuse deepfake technology and flags an alarm about how it could become the “next weapon to extort, blackmail, and even harm women.” “Deepfakes could be used as a means to target and harass girls, extort money from them, or even commit sexual assault. Their families in small villages or towns might not understand the gravity of the situation when their honor is at stake,” the singer emphasized on a social media platform.

Furthermore, Sripaada revealed that women who have borrowed money from loan apps are being harassed by collectors who manipulate their images into explicit content with the intention of extorting money from them.

“A Deep Fake is going to be tougher for the usual untrained eye to spot. I truly hope there is a nationwide awareness campaign that can kickstart urgently to educate the general public about the dangers of deepfakes for girls and to report incidents instead of taking matters into their own hands,” she said.

The horrifying video, that went viral this week, showed what appeared to be Ms Mandanna entering in a lift. In reality, it was a video of British-Indian influencer Zara Patel doctored using deepfake technology to replace her face with Ms Mandanna’s.

Reacting to the entire incident, the actor said the whole ordeal has left her “extremely scary”. I feel really hurt to share this and have to talk about the deepfake video of me being spread online, she said.

The central government has taken cognisance of the deepfake video and sent an advisory to social media platforms.
