Bubneshewar: The name ‘Sitrang’ has been proposed by Thailand for a possible cyclonic storm, a low pressure area over North Andaman Sea, which intensified into a depression on Saturday, about 1,460 km from Sagar Island in West Bengal, the IMD said. In the south-southeast, it is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 24.

The weather system moved west-northwestwards and concentrated into a depression over Andaman Islands west at 8:30 am on Saturday, the bulletin said.

“It is expected to move northwestwards and turn into a deep depression over east-central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal by the morning of 23 October. Thereafter, the system will gradually move north-northeastwards. It is very likely to recurve further and intensify into a cyclonic storm over central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 24,” the IMD said.

Thereafter, it will continue to move north-northeastwards and cross the Bangladesh coast between Tinakona Island and Sandwich, around the morning of October 25, the IMD forecast said.

Heavy rainfall warning has been for the Odisha districts of Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Keonjhar, Cuttack, and Khurda. “We have put authorities of eight districts on high alert. The state is ready to face the challenge,” said Special Relief Commissioner P K Jena.

Widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls very likely over Andaman & Nicobar Islands during 22nd-24th with isolated very heavy falls on 22nd October.

Fairly widespread/Widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorm/lightning very likely over Arunachal Pradesh on 24th & 25th; Assam & Meghalaya during 24th-26th and Mizoram & Tripura during 23rd-26th October.

Isolated very heavy rainfall also very likely over Arunachal Pradesh on 24th & 25th; Assam & Meghalaya and Mizoram & Tripura on 24th October, 2022.
