Maharashtra: 26-Year-old man allegedly strangulated his mother to death after an argument in Palghar, arrested

Palghar: In yet another shocking incident, a man allegedly strangulated his 50-year-old mother to death and tried to pass it off as a suicide in Thane district of Maharashtra. The police gave this information on Wednesday. The incident took place on Monday in Kalyan town and the 34-year-old accused, Ravi Poomani, was arrested on Tuesday, Inspector SG Gawli of Kolsewadi police station said. The man, who worked in a factory in Navi Mumbai’s Ghansoli area, had frequent arguments with his mother Saroja Poomani over domestic and money issues.

The officer said that on the intervening night of Sunday-Monday, the two again had a fight. The man allegedly strangulated his mother to death with a rope on Monday morning, they said. Later, he hanged the victim from the ceiling fan with a cloth to make it appear as a case of suicide, the officer said.

They said that after the post-mortem report indicated strangulation, the Kolsewadi police on Tuesday registered a case against her on charges of murder and destruction of evidence based on her father’s complaint. The matter is being investigated, the police said.

A case under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 302 (murder) was registered and the accused was arrested.
