Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced a subsidy of Rs 300 per quintal to provide relief to distressed onion farmers in the state on Monday in the Vidhan Sabha. The Chief Minister said that this decision will give great relief to onion producing farmers.
Giving a statement in this regard in the Assembly, Chief Minister Shinde said, “In Kharif season, there is a large influx of red onion. Due to the increase in onion production in other states of the country, the demand is less than the supply. This has led to a fall in the price of onion. hai. Since onion is a perishable crop, minimum support price cannot be imposed on it. Onion is an important cash crop in Maharashtra and its price is a very sensitive part for onion farmers.”
Onion production in a country, its domestic demand and exports from the country etc. all affect the price of onion in the market. A committee was appointed by the state government to provide relief to the productive farmers. The committee had recommended Rs 200 and Rs 300 per quintal, but the Chief Minister said that the government would stand by the onion farmers and decided to give them subsidized subsidy of Rs 300 per quintal.
