Maharashtra: Dalit youth killed for celebrating Ambedkar Jayanti in Nanded, 7 arrested

Injured Akshay Bhalerao was rushed to the nearest hospital but doctors declared him brought dead even before admission.

Maharashtra: Dalit youth killed for celebrating Ambedkar Jayanti in Nanded, 7 arrested

Mumbai: A 24-year-old Dalit youth was allegedly murdered in Maharashtra’s Nanded district for celebrating the birth anniversary of Dr. BR Ambedkar. Police has arrested seven people in this case. The police gave this information on Saturday.

A Nanded police official said that the incident took place two days back in Bondar Haveli village. The deceased has been identified as Akshay Bhalerao. The police officer said that Bhalerao was passing on Thursday evening. The accused belong to upper caste and were celebrating a marriage. Some people had swords in their hands.

The officer said that on seeing Bhalerao and his brother Akash, one of them said, these people should be punished for celebrating Bhim Jayanti (Ambedkar’s birth anniversary which falls on April 14) in the village. The official said that there was a heated exchange between the two sides on this. Meanwhile, Akshay Bhalerao was attacked. He was stabbed to death during the fight. Also his brother was beaten up.

Injured Akshay Bhalerao was rushed to the nearest hospital but doctors declared him brought dead even before admission. The FIR was registered under the Indian Penal Code for murder, attempt to murder, rioting and assault, as well as the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the official said. Seven accused were arrested in this case. The entire matter is being investigated.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested Sunita Dhangar, posted as an administrative officer in the education department of the Nashik Municipal Corporation, and Nitin Joshi, a junior clerk, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a former headmaster of an institute in Maharashtra. A search of Dhangar’s house led to Rs 85 lakh in cash, 320 grams of gold and property documents.
