Maharashtra: IMD issues red alert, Schools and colleges remain closed in these districts today

Mumbai: On Friday, In view of the red alert of the Meteorological Department, holiday has been declared in all the schools of Mumbai, Raigarh, Panvel, Palghar. Due to heavy rains on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, a landslide has occurred near the Kamshet tunnel, due to which one lane from Mumbai to Pune has been closed.

Mumbai: On Friday, In view of the red alert of the Meteorological Department, holiday has been declared in all the schools of Mumbai, Raigarh, Panvel, Palghar. Due to heavy rains on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, a landslide has occurred near the Kamshet tunnel, due to which one lane from Mumbai to Pune has been closed.

On the other hand, due to heavy rains on Thursday, there was water-logging in many areas of Mumbai. Heavy traffic jams were witnessed on many routes while suburban trains of Western and Central Railways ran late. The Meteorological Department has issued a ‘red alert’ for rain in Mumbai and neighboring Raigad district.

The intensity of rain was high in Mumbai during the day on Thursday, while the suburbs received heavy showers since afternoon, with Dahisar in the north receiving 185.41 mm of rain.According to data released by the BMC, Borivali West recorded 146.80 mm of rain, Kandivali 133 mm, Colaba 103 mm, while Fort area recorded 101 mm of rain.

Borivali and Kandivali are located in the northern end of Mumbai while Colaba and Fort are located in the southern part. The island city, eastern and western suburbs received an average rainfall of 83.23 mm, 62.72 mm and 95.0 mm respectively between 8 am and 6 pm today.

Water-logging was observed in Matunga, DN Nagar, Byculla, Trombay, Azad Maidan, Kandivali, Kalbadevi, Oshiwara, Dahisar, Magathane at 3.30 pm, almost half a feet in most of these areas, officials of the local bodies department said. The water was full.

Traffic was slow in the north in the evening and people faced difficulties in moving from office to their homes, most of which were concentrated in the southern part of the city and Bandra etc., the official said. Western Railway suburban train services were delayed by 10-15 minutes throughout the day due to the rains, mainly due to water-logging at Marine Lines and Borivali stations in the south and north respectively.

Western Railway officials said the waterlogging at Marine Lines station was due to the ongoing construction work for the Coastal Road, an ambitious project of the BMC. However, BMC officials rejected this and claimed that the marine.For neighboring Thane and Palghar districts, the weather center has issued an ‘orange alert’, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places, the official said.
